6 Bets To Never Make in a Casino!

Steve and Matt Bourie, from the American Casino Guide, discuss six of the worst bets you can make in a casino. They explain why these bets are dumb and, if possible, how a similar bet can be made with much better odds for the player. Topics covered include: Big 6 and Big 8 on the craps table; the 5-number bet on a double-zero roulette wheel, only betting 4 coins on video poker; splitting 10’s in blackjack; the any 7 bet on the craps table; and not betting max coins on a wide-area progressive slot machine.

  1. splitting hands is the equivalent of doubling on 12

  2. Add this to your list. I'm a table games dealer in Las Vegas. They now have a triple zero wheel at Planet Hollywood. Not only does this increase the house edge even more, but they have a bet on the layout that pays 11 to 1 if any zero hits. You can place any 3 number bet at any casino with a double zero wheel and get those same odds, but with one less number on the wheel. Talk about a sucker bet. Sheesh!

  6. I've watched some of your videos and they're not right you tell people to split eights when there's an eight showing it's not a good idea you tell people to double down on 11 even if there's a 10 showing when they shouldn't

  7. Any variation where you have 2 units on the ace-deuce and 1 unit each on the high and low….versus 4 units on the any-crap, instead. (missing out on the extra unit if the high low hits)

Casino that offers half back on a bet when the zeroes hit, betting that bet versus betting all of those corresponding (for example, if they give half back on black, betting all 18 black numbers inside is worse than just betting 18 dollars on black).

Taking down a don't pass/don't come bet instead of just placing the opposite side (if you think it will lose, better to hedge it then to take it down, you can always turn off the place bet, but you can never put the dp/dc back after you take it away).

  10. Sorry I am an dealer at a casino. The don't bets are true. Every thing they have said is true. On the any 7 bet is on of the worst best in the casino. If you bet the pass line if no point is established than the pass line wins. Once a point is established pass line loses. The come bets will win. You can also ask for hopping 7s they get paid 15 to one if you have $3 hope the 7s. You will get $12 if do that. Hopping bets are a one roll bet now.

  12. The corner red 6 8 were removed from Dice layouts a long time ago. As a craps dealer it took me a long time to work those out of my lingo (dice calls) when I'm on Stick. Are there still dinosaur dice layouts that have the corner red (6-8)? They're probably out there, but I haven't seen one in years.

  16. You should never bet anything less than MAX on Video Poker. If it's a $5 machine and you're only betting the single credit for $1, then find you a quarter machine and bet MAX on it for $1.25. Never bet less than MAX!

  22. I agree that the big red (one roll 7 bet) is a horrible bet, however I disagree with their option of the come line or pass line bet. I would rather spend $3 on a 3 way 7 hop bet, which pays 15/1. So if a 4-3 shows up, you win $15 dollars on a $1 bet, while you lose $2 because a 5-2 or a 6-1 isn't rolled. So if you're at a $10 dollar table and want to protect your $10 line/come bet against a craps roll,
. this is the best method.

  30. Good vid. I totally agree with not splitting 10's in BJ… but there is one exception and that's if you're in a blackjack tournament. But for straight cash betting in blackjack, no no no splitting 10s.

  33. as a former casino employee and mathematician I have found that any bet that displays the payout odds it is a bad bet…for example, any bet in the middle of the craps table…they have the highest house edge for the table…whereas the best payout odds for craps doesn't even have a marked spot to place the bet which is 'free odds'…other good bets don't have payout printed on tables include roulette and blackjack (except insurance which is printed on the layout), games like 3 card poker and Caribbean stud have odds shown and high house edge
